You know me. I freaking love sci-fi. Most especially when it comes to androids. I love sci-fi games and sci-fi movies and sci-fi books. So of course I was stoked for Detroit: Become Human. Detroit: Become Human was actually based on a short created by Quantic Dream to showcase the real-time processing power of the PlayStation 3 (at the time). If you haven’t seen it, you can view it below.
Awesome, right? I mean, the graphics are a little dated for 2018 (but hey, the short debuted in 2012… That’s 6 years of upgraded graphics!) but the story is still solid. So they took that idea and they ran with it.
In Detroit: Become Human, you play as three different androids in their very distinct travels as they, ahem, become human, more or less. Kara, the same as above, is one of them. Another is Marcus, and lastly there’s Connor. Connor is an android sent by master android development corporation CyberLife to aid in the investigation of “deviant” androids (known as deviants). These androids somehow break programming and can seem to feel emotions, break programming (such as the “you are not to harm a human” rule), and otherwise exhibit what can amount to free will. Connor, assigned to human partner who does not much like him at first Lt. Hank Anderson, is to help investigate the cause of and develop a plan on how to stop android deviancy.
The best thing about Connor is his role and partnership with Hank. Hank groans that he’s been assigned a “tin can” for a partner… But depending on your in game decisions, can grow to fondly like Connor. It feels very Isaac Asimov to me — particularly partner Elijah Bailey and R. Daneel Olivaw. Also partners. Daneel also acts quite a bit like Connor — doesn’t shut up, asks questions (sometimes inappropriate ones), seems almost like… a bit clumsy, even for an android. It’s adorable.
But Connor is also an android built with specific purpose and specific programming, and to say that he can swiftly and efficiently turn into an abrupt killing machine? Yeah, that. I love it!
So after crushing the game in about two days and wanting to take a break before my next playthrough (it’s got multiple endings and multiple scenarios alllll over the place), I thought I’d draw Connor and Hank in a sort of… Cheesy cop movie poster type way.
Sketch first, then basic lighting and shading, plotting out how I wanted it to look:
Working on the shading, and then I added Sumo, Hank’s dog! Connor may or may not get along with Sumo depending on your in game decisions.
Made some facial changes. I draw my OC Azra a lot so sometimes other faces end up looking like his (especially when they share certain features with his, like dark hair, dark eyebrows, hooded eyes, and cheekbones).
Might be done. And then added some other relevant things to the game that might appear in a poster. Sorry, couldn’t find CyberLife Sans!
