Recently I signed up to take part in a huge collaboration project for fun called South Park Reanimate. If you’re familiar with “reanimate” projects, what these sorts of projects will do is reanimate a popular project, either in their own style or a different style, but keep the content the same.
There was an open call to artists available a few months back looking for animators and illustrators. I can’t animate well, but I can certainly illustrate, so I submitted my application and got accepted. The episode chosen is “The List” from South Park’s 11th season, which goes on to show how the kids at South Park are affected when the girls of South Park Elementary come up with a rated list of the cutest to ugliest boys in the grade. I was assigned a short 2 second scene of the schoolhouse, with lightning cracking overhead and the signature American flag wagging in the wind. Without much for animation software, I experimented with a variety of frame animations, but ultimately ended up using some open use green screen items from YouTube to complete the lightning and waving flag.
I can’t wait to see the finished product for this project, though! You should see some of the other animations. Some of the artists are as young as thirteen (It is scary for me to admit I may be the oldest person on the project) and are creating these amazing, fantastic animations. Hopefully I’ll be able to update this post once the completed South Park Reanimate episode is finally done. If you’re interested in becoming a South Park Reanimate illustrator or animator, you can visit the South Park Reanimate Tumblr and message the project runner.
